My Writing Process
Writing is a process. Reflect on what that means for you. What has been your experience in exploring the process of writing throughout EWC4U? What works for you, and what doesn't? How have you personalized the process? How has your writing process changed since beginning the course? How might you alter your writing process in the future?
For me, writing as a process means that a piece is never really done in one step. It takes time to develop ideas, rethink them, and improve how they are communicated. Throughout EWC4U, I’ve learned that writing isn’t just about getting words on a page, but about shaping and refining those words through multiple stages.
At the beginning of the course, I tended to rush into writing full drafts without much planning. I focused more on finishing quickly rather than developing strong ideas. As a result, my writing sometimes lacked depth or clear organization. Over time, I started to see the value of brainstorming and outlining first. Taking a few minutes to plan actually made my writing clearer and easier to expand on.
One thing that works well for me now is drafting freely at first without worrying too much about perfection. This helps me get my ideas out without overthinking. Then, during revision, I focus more on structure, clarity, and adding detail. Peer feedback has also been helpful because it gives me a different perspective on what makes sense and what doesn’t.
What doesn’t work for me is trying to edit while I write. When I do that, I get stuck on small details and lose my flow. I’ve learned to separate drafting and editing into different steps so I can stay more focused.
I’ve personalized my writing process by keeping it flexible. Sometimes I use detailed outlines, and other times just a few key points depending on the assignment. I also focus more on making my writing sound natural and less forced, which has made it feel more like my own voice.
Since the beginning of the course, my writing process has become more organized and intentional. I now spend more time revising and thinking about how my ideas connect, rather than just trying to complete the task.
In the future, I want to improve my revision stage even more by being more critical of my work and not settling for my first draft. I also want to spend more time strengthening introductions and conclusions so my writing feels more complete overall.
